Tips for Painting Vinyl Siding

Many homeowners who have vinyl siding on their properties do not really know that they can be painted. Over the passage of time, the vinyl siding will become incredibly dirty. Environmental debris, dust, and grime will all continue to settle on top of the siding, thus greatly affecting its aesthetic appeal. Because the siding is installed on the exterior of the building, you have to make sure that you clean it regularly. However, over the passage of time, some of the stains will become permanently stuck on the surface, often leading to discoloration. However, instead of completely replacing the vinyl siding, why not just repaint it? Repainting the vinyl siding will add new life to your siding. Here are a few tips to help you paint the vinyl siding.

Selecting the Colors

You need to understand that there are a few limitations involved when repainting the vinyl siding. Certain paint colors, especially darker ones, absorb a lot of heat, which could cause the vinyl siding to warp and peel. Therefore, it’s recommended that you primarily choose from lighter shades for the vinyl siding. Many of the major paint manufacturers usually provide a wide range of color palettes that are generally safe for use on vinyl. When buying paint for use on the siding, you should look for options that contain high amounts of gloss in it. Satin based colors are a good choice because they are quite retentive and last longer on the surface. Moreover, they are considerably easier to clean, as well.

Preparing the Surface

Before you think about painting the vinyl siding, you will need to clean the mildew and dirt that has formed over the surface. The best way to clean the surface is to use a conventional garden sprayer and a hose. Many people think that using a power washer is a good idea, but it’s really not a suitable choice. The pressure from the power washer can cause some of the water to move behind the siding as well.

You need to create a cleaning mixture that contains a quart of bleach, just a small amount of laundry detergent, and a lot of water. This will help remove all of the mildew and dirt that accumulates on the surface. Use a hard bristle brush on the siding to effectively remove all traces of mildew and dirt, as well as other impurities that get stuck on the surface.

Painting

The best way to paint the vinyl siding is to use a spray painting gun. It’s an excellent application method for use because it saves a great deal of time and also helps you get an even finish, without any worry of roller or brush marks on the surface. Just make sure that you do not focus too much of the spray on one part, as that will become thicker than the rest. Apply the spray evenly on the surface to get a fine finish. These are some simple tips to help you paint the vinyl siding.
